Smash burgers are all over the internet right now but you have to try this method and this burger sauce – it’s so, SO good! The crispy edges, the special sauce, and carmelized onions make such a savory and delicious burger.
Smashburgers are such a fun and different way of doing burgers. I feel like even though you’re still getting a burger, bun, cheese, etc. the thin patties and crispy edges just have a richer flavor than a normal burger.

Ingredients for Smash Burgers
- Ground meat – We use moose most often, any red meat will work.
- Bacon – Any kind!
- Onion – I use a yellow onion but any kind will work!
- Butter
- Mayonnaise – I make mine homemade, but any kind will work!
- Mustard
- Ketchup
- Pickles (& juice) – Pepperoncinis work for this too!
- Cheese – American works best for melting, but thin slices work well too!
- Burger Buns

Instructions
- Heat a medium skillet over medium low heat, add butter and sliced onions.
- Allow to cook and become brown before stirring, about 10 mins.
- Stir and let cook for another 10 minutes until desired doneness, remove from heat.
- Mix all the ingredients for the sauce and set aside.
- Chop the bacon and add to ground meat, mix until incorporated.
- Roll meat into small balls, roughly 3-4 tbsp each.
- Heat Blackstone, griddle, or cast iron to medium high heat.
- Place the meat balls onto the heated surface, use the burger press to smash each ball.
- Allow to cook for 50-70 secs before flipping (the edges will be showing gray/cooked).
- Flip patty, add a slice of cheese (only to half the patties) & allow to cook again for another 50-70 seconds.
- Stack 2 patties together & set aside.
- Repeat with all burger balls.
- Assemble burgers – bun, patties, sprinkle of salt, caramelized onions, chopped pickle, & smash sauce.
- Enjoy!

Tools for Smashing Burgers
Use the tools you have! You don’t HAVE to have a blackstone and a perfect press to make these work. We literally used a 15lb weight (with parchment paper covering it) one time in the early days! That being said, here’s what’s recommended:
- Burger press
- Flat top grill, hefty griddle, or cast iron pan, or carbon steel griddle.
- Large metal spatula
Serve it with:
- A bag of frozen fries
- Potato salad
- A side salad
- Fresh fruit

Variations and Toppings for Smash Burgers
Obviously burgers are pretty customizable and you can add what you want. I like these just the way the recipe reads but feel free to add your favorite burger toppings – lettuce, tomato, ketchup, etc.
Storing and Reheating
These store and reheat well! Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. I reheat them in a frying pan with a little bit of water and a lid.
